Has art always been a part of your life?
Of course. Always. Everywhere.
What inspires you?
Every objects, people, relationship, space, light, shadow.
When did you start creating art? Drawing? Painting? Making?
Since middle school.
Your work has a very ephemeral feel, what would you say influences you?
Movement of light and space is changing every day. The light merges, moves, and dissolves. And through these various transformations, the light creates a sort of illusion that forms relationship with new spaces, enabling its meaning to expand and takeoff into a new level.
I try to discover a visual language by acknowledging the communion of time and space, and detecting a union of light and imagination.
You work in both 2D and 3D, do you prefer one over the other?
It related together. 3D created from 2D, and they are not separate from each other.
When did you start making the boxes of light?
Since 2010.
How has your time in Berlin influenced your artistic practice?
My work focuses on depicting a series of images collected from various places and spaces. Especially many wonderful architectural elements and the singular atmosphere in Berlin provided me with inspiration. It was a nice opportunity to expand my limitations, sharing beautiful things with a cool artists together in Berlin.
Tell us about yourself and your creative journey; including exhibits and events that you’ve been part of…
I graduated from Seoul Arts High School, and received BA and MFA degrees in Painting and Print Making from Ewha Woman’s University. I am currently in the Painting doctoral program at the same university. I had three solo exhibitions in Seoul, Korea and Chicago, USA, and joined several group exhibitions at places such as Kunstraum Tapir Gallery, Berlin, Forman’s Smokehouse Gallery, London, Ceres Gallery, New York. I joined two artist residency programs in Chicago and Berlin, and was selected as Archival artist of SOMA DRAWING CENTER in 2011.
I have received special education in art since my childhood due to my unique home environment. Nearly every one of my family members is involved in the art world. My late grandfather is a well-known painter in my native country and served as a professor in Seoul. Due to the artistic atmosphere that filled my house, I was always open to discussions with my family about various topics related to art. I consider myself lucky to have such family that has been very supportive of my plans to get involved in the art world and has given me practical advice whenever I’ve had to make important decisions related to my career.
What are your proudest moments as an artist?
When I find my own visual language from my individual experience and when my works make people happy.
